Sandalwood Chess Set

In addition to rugs, we carry a wide arrange of one-off items when traveling around India.  One particular item that caught our eyes was this old chess set.

As you may know, chess originated in India during the Gupta Empire, where it's early form in the 6th century was known as chaturanga, which translates as "four divisions (of the military) : infantry, cavalry, elephantry and chariotry, represented by the pieces that would evolve into the modern pawn, knight, bishop and rook, respectively.

The chess pieces you see here are hand carved, sandal wood made by the artisans of Jaipur, Rajasthan. This set includes an iron rod stand. The marble board is also hand carved. The board is durable, contains long lasting polish, stain proof and easily washable.

This one of a kind collector piece would make an outstanding gift this Christmas to those who appreciate the game of chess.
