2 minute History lesson: Dhurries

Posted on Oct 04, 2017.

Dhurrie rugs are flat woven, not knotted, rugs and are made on a horizontal loom like fabrics are woven. These are the oldest form of the man made floor coverings.

Flat woven rugs are sturdy, reversible, and are most popular for cottages, kitchens, and living rooms. Dhurrie designs and shades are ever changing to reflect floor covering fashion.

Flat rugs are woven all over the world, but the best designer dhurries are made in India from 100% local wool.

Dhurries from other countries are often cotton that lacks the wear and cleaning qualities of pure wool. The hard wearing qualities and strength of dhurries comes from the resiliency of the wool yarn and the number of lines per inch which varies from 40 to 60.
